DuBOIS – Both the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic Marauders and South Williamsport Mounties marched into Mansell Stadium on Friday night with one clear motive – reaching the PIAA Class A State Championship. The semi-final matchup between the two teams was one with a clear expectation. That expectation was watching one of the state’s top rushers, SW’s Dominick Bragalone, face the state’s top defense in the Marauders.

Coming into the game, senior Sam McCloskey stated that his team wasn’t nervous. “We knew we could take this team down, and we were excited to do so,” McCloskey said. Throughout the rainy night, the battle between the Marauders and Mountaineers was intense. Although it was BG who was leading most of the game, South Williamsport continuously fought back to sustain a one-score deficit. BG’s Brandon Chadbourn commenced the clash with a break-away 30-yard touchdown run with 7:52 left in the 1st quarter.

The Mountie’s Dominick Bragalone, a 4,000+ yard rusher, broke through BG defenders for a 28-yard score early in the second quarter. Two minutes later, senior D.J. Kitt ran 3 yards up the middle for a Guilfoyle red zone touchdown.

With 2:05 left before halftime, junior Aaron Yasulitis intercepted a pass from SW’s Matt Boone and returned it 53 yards for the BG score. The one-handed catch and run would give the Marauders a bit of breathing room.

Heading into halftime with a 21-7 lead, the future was looking bright for the Marauders. However, South Williamsport certainly didn’t want to believe that. Dominick Bragalone was handed the ball late in the third quarter and barreled through BG defenders for a 31-yard touchdown run.

Returning to a one-score lead, Brandon Chadbourn took it upon himself to challenge the Mountaineer defense. Rolling off to the left side of the field, Chadbourn swerved through his blocker’s openings and sprinted 37 yards into the end zone to increase BG’s lead to 28-14 over South Williamsport. Watch Brandon’s touchdown run below:

The Mounties weren’t conceding anytime soon. With 10:06 left in the game, Bragalone would add a third touchdown to his game stats as he found an open hole to dash 64 yards for the Mountie score. This would be Bragalone’s final touchdown of the night and of his career. He ended the night with 351 yards on 43 carries.

The Marauders were anxiously awaiting the clock to strike 0:00, as the Mountaineers were still attempting to squeak past BG via their star rusher. South Williamsport had two more opportunities to score, but they just simply couldn’t get by the Bishop Guilfoyle defense. Dominick Bragalone was shut down on a crucial fourth quarter drive by BG’s Sam McCloskey, Aaron Yasulitis, and Owen Wolf with two minutes left in the game. “That wasn’t the first time we were placed in that position. Regardless of what happened during the first three and a half quarters, those last two minutes won the game for us,” McCloskey said.

With the Marauders in possession of the ball for the remainder of the game, the BG fans began tossing Hershey kisses in the bleachers. BG would reign triumphant with a 28-21 successful victory over South Williamsport. Brandon Chadbourn finished the game with 145 yards on 15 carries. Sam McCloskey rushed for 106 yards on 11 carries.

The undefeated Marauders, now 15-0, have clinched a spot in the PIAA Class A State Championship. The game will be held on Friday, 12/12 @ 1PM at Hershey Stadium in Hershey, PA. They will face the 15-0 Clairton Bears, who are the WPIAL champions. D.J. Kitt and his teammates have been seeking this game for as long as they’ve played the sport. “It’s a dream come true. We aren’t just satisfied that we made it to Hershey though, because we plan on winning Friday’s game and coming back a state champion,” Kitt said.
